School Year 2009 to 2010

What to expect from Ms. Fleming's 5th grade Language Arts Class:

Reading Calendar: Students are required to read a calculated amount of time per day/week/month.
This is for a grade and can affect your overall grade. For every 30 min. of reading a student will earn 2 points. The students will have 2 days to make up the reading time for 1/2 the credit, after which, the time will still be made up with no credit.

Homework: expect a minimum of 60 minutes a night of homework from all subjects. (statistics have shown 10 min. per grade per day is an average)

Homework (H2) help nights are Monday and Wednesday of each week. Students received a paper on the details of this opportunity. You may request this service or teachers may recommend this as a possible solution to frequent incomplete assignments or as a invaluable support system for a struggling student. Students will work with volunteers and teachers from 3:00 - 5:15 ish. The activity bus is also available for transportation. You may contact the office for further details.

Journal/Reading: I will try to have a minimum of 10 minutes a day to have students read their own trade book and respond to it in their journals.
(whatever time is spent in class for reading does count on the reading log)

Book Reports: Expect to have a minimum of one book report per grading period. These will be creative and not necessarily what your parents have
done at the high school level. Yes, there will be a type of summary and it will increase in length by the last report, but we want to have
some fun "advertising" the great books that you are reading.

Book Orders: I will be distributing book orders montly. Please make payments by check to SCHOLASTIC BOOKS.
This is an excellent source for locating quality literature for your child. Remember, they will be responsible for a book report and calendar reading.

Spelling: Spelling is very independent in 5th grade. I will have options made available to students related to creative internet sites that will challenge your child to create various puzzles using their word lists. This will be a different medium and many students will enjoy using the computer compared to workbook pages. All students; however, will be responsible for the sentences on the fourth night. They will receive directions on Monday or Tuesday for the assignment which will incorporate grammar skills instructed from previous as well as current lessons. I will give the students the assignment in advance to allow them the opportunity to work on it nightly. It is lengthy and a big chunk of the grade for grammar/spelling.

Please click on the Homework Guidelines page on the right hand side of this page for details regarding spelling homework.

Daily Plans:
Please click on the appropriate grading period for a week at a glance of what to expect in language arts. I will do my best to maintain this weekly for you. The main focus for these pages will be project deadlines, testing, and any misc. long term assignments. This feature is also to be made available on the PowerSchool web-based program site; it will not be available until the end of the 1st nine weeks. I will keep you posted. I do not wish to make you go to too many different sites.
